Saskatchewan proposes lawsuits should be allowed if intimate images shared

first_imgREGINA – Saskatchewan Justice Minister Don Morgan has introduced a bill that would allow people to sue for compensation if their intimate images have been shared without their permission.A victim would be able to sue in small-claims court where they are claiming damages less than $30,000 and would not have to wait for criminal charges to be laid.Morgan said he’s particularly concerned about how the sharing of intimate images is affecting young people.“Social media is one of those things that’s incredibly pervasive. It follows young people home. It follows them into their bedrooms late at night,” Morgan said Tuesday at the legislature in Regina.“This is a protection that we want to have so that they will have a disincentive for that type of conduct.”The government said it is difficult to rely on the Criminal Code to deter cyberbullying through unauthorized sharing of intimate images because the burden of proof is so high. The proposed legislation would shift the onus of proof to the person that circulated the image by requiring them to show that they had received consent.Saskatchewan is the first province to take such a step, said Morgan.“My advice to somebody would be don’t post something unless you’re absolutely certain that you’ve got the consent from the person’s that in it.”Interim NDP Leader Nicole Sarauer said the Opposition just got the legislation Tuesday and needs time to review it.However, Sarauer said it is time to modernize the law in Saskatchewan to deal with the serious problem.“It’s important because the civil burden of proof is much lower than the criminal burden of proof, that there is that avenue for individuals who are victims of this situation to have an avenue of repercussions outside of the criminal court,” she said.Shannon Lea of the No Touchy Campaign in Saskatchewan said the legislation could force someone to think twice about trying to exact revenge on the internet.“I think it’s huge for people, even in intimate relationships, who have had this happen to them to be able to do something about it instead of sit back and continue to be victimized,” Lea told radio station CKRM.The No Touchy Campaign aims to raise public awareness of the extent of sexual assault in Canada.last_img read more

Kevin Garnett Demanded Reggie Evans Stay With Brooklyn Nets

When Kevin Garnett was traded to the Brooklyn Nets from the Boston Celtics, part of the arrangement was for him to go to Brooklyn with teammates Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. What has recently become public knowledge is: Garnett also demanded that Reggie Evans remain on the Brooklyn roster so that they would play together.“I won’t go into specific details of what I was wanting and dislikes and everything else when it came to building the business of basketball,” Garnett said before the Nets beat the 76ers, 127-97, in Monday night’s preseason game at Wachovia Center. “But I will say this: One of the key things for me was not only Paul (Pierce) and ‘Jet’ (Jason Terry) coming here with me to make it comfortable, but Reggie Evans had to be on the roster. That was a huge key for me coming here.”Garnett really respects Evans’ work ethics on the court and according to Evans the two players really hit it off.“Me and KG, we’re just clicking,” Evans said. “We are just taking advantage of this moment, and taking advantage of it is winning a championship. Sometimes you’ve got to do the little stuff, always talking to each other, communicating with each other and stuff like that. Everything is a process and we are slowly getting to know each other on the court and off the court. Dapping each other up, all that stuff is coming natural. Ain’t nothing fake about it. It’s all just natural, which is good.”Garnett and Evans formed a bond that will benefit both players, especially Evans who’s getting the opportunity to get mentored by a Championship player. read more

Russell Westbrook Does Everything Fast For Better And For Worse

201453.312.1 201649.9%21.7% 201557.115.2 Source: Synergy Sports Given the aggressive way he challenges multiple defenders at once and the energy he expends in doing so, it’s not all that surprising that Westbrook’s turnover rate is spiking. At the same time, he’s scoring in transition just under 50 percent of the time, which is his lowest success rate on such plays since his rookie season in 2008.There’s also been a major shift in the kind of turnovers Westbrook has been committing since he took on an unprecedented share of his team’s offense in the absence of Durant. The share of his miscues that stem from losing the ball — as opposed to throwing a bad pass, for instance — has more than doubled this season, according to Basketball-Reference. (In fairness, fellow MVP candidate James Harden, who has also been asked to take on a far greater role in his team’s offense, has struggled with many of the same turnover issues.)Video Playerhttps://fivethirtyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/westbrook-vs-heat1.mp400:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume. In Cleveland on Sunday, I asked Thunder coach Billy Donovan about Westbrook’s aggressive, coast-to-coast sprints, and Donovan said he’s careful to not try to change the player Westbrook is, especially considering how much his star is asked to facilitate on offense.“When he does make a mistake, or doesn’t make the right decision and it results in a turnover, nobody is harder on him than himself. So there’s a line for me: I don’t want to take away a guy who, in my opinion, is the best open-floor player in the world,” Donovan said before his team lost to the Cavaliers. “After he makes a mistake, he does a good job of regulating and pulling back so that he can make better decisions.”Westbrook, who’s faced questions for the majority of his career about whether he sometimes plays too fast, has said in the past that he doesn’t feel his play is out of control.“I don’t think I play reckless at all,” he said. “I just think I play at a high level that other people may not be used to seeing.” That much is almost impossible to disagree with.Kawhi Leonard’s little fundamentalsIt’s challenging to illustrate how good Kawhi Leonard is on defense with numbers alone, but one metric offers us a glimpse: How often his blocked shots end up in the Spurs’ hands as opposed to the other team’s. It happens way more often than it should. On average, defensive teams come up with the ball about 57 percent of the time after they block a shot. But San Antonio has gotten possession of the ball on 75 percent of Leonard’s blocks this season, the highest rate in the NBA among players with at least 25 swats, according to information from BigDataBall, a database that logs the league’s play-by-play data. (San Antonio is still somewhat above-average at recovering blocks if you take Leonard’s numbers out of the mix, but the Spurs’ 61 percent recovery rate without Leonard doesn’t stand out from the rest of the league nearly as much.)It’s unclear whether this speaks solely to Leonard’s ability to guide blocks with his oversized hands, or whether it’s more a function of the Spurs being in a good position to field the swats once they occur. In any case, Leonard had a great mentor for this sort of thing. Recently retired Spurs legend Tim Duncan saw his teammates recover almost 74 percent of his blocked shots last season, per BigDataBall; the highest rate of any NBA player with 70 blocks or more.Paul George, all of a sudden the NBA’s best free-throw shooterAcross the board, from his three-point stroke to his solid efficiency in the last four seconds of the shot clock, Paul George has improved considerably as a shooter this season. He has also become a surprisingly great free-throw shooter — he’s hitting almost 93 percent from the charity stripe and is leading the league in free-throw percentage. That might not seem all that surprising — after all, he shot 86 percent from the free-throw line last season. But the Pacers star was very slightly worse than league average from the line as a rookie, making 76 percent of his shots that year. If he keeps this up, George would be the first player in more than 45 years — and just the second player in NBA history after Chet Walker — to lead the NBA in free-throw percentage after shooting worse than league average from the stripe during his rookie season. The Memphis Grizzlies’ defense is just for kicksThe Grit ’n’ Grind Grizzlies have long been known for their tough, bruising style of old-school basketball. But at certain points over the years, Memphis looked like it was doing its best impression of a soccer team instead. The Grizzlies, fourth in the NBA with 35 kicked-ball violations, are on track to rank among the NBA’s top 10 in the category for the sixth time in nine seasons, according to rare-stat site NBA Miner. Leading the charge for the Grizzlies is Marc Gasol, who tops the league with 13 kicked-ball violations this season, per BigDataBall. Unlike smoother players like LeBron James or Chris Paul, who have a signature ebb and flow to their games, the Oklahoma City star is unpredictable from one play to the next. Because of his game-changing speed — when going full bore, he’s one of the NBA’s five fastest players, according to the league’s high-level tracking data — Westbrook’s capable of making plays that most other athletes can only dream of pulling off.More often than not, though, when Westbrook’s talent backfires, it’s because he’s trying too hard to make something happen, particularly when he’s outnumbered during fast-break situations.Oklahoma City, after forcing a live-ball turnover, is finishing its possessions in just over eight seconds on average, which is by far the fastest rate in the league, according to Inpredictable, a site that specializes in calculating win probabilities and other advanced sports metrics. Westbrook, as the team’s point guard and best player, is an enormous part of that speed. But the quick trips down the court aren’t necessarily paying off: As of Wednesday afternoon, the Thunder were tied for the second-worst efficiency after live-ball turnovers. That’s a steep drop-off from last year, when Kevin Durant was still in Oklahoma City and the club had the NBA’s eighth-best offense in those scenarios.Perhaps Westbrook’s speed-demon tendencies have something to do with that inefficiency. In transition, Westbrook’s reliance on his speed means he’ll often experience the same dichotomy as Sonic the Hedgehog: He either sprints triumphantly across the finish line or crashes painfully into an obstruction, losing all his golden rings.Video Playerhttps://fivethirtyeight.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/westbrook-vs-clippers-clip.mp400:0000:0000:00Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.Westbrook is involved in an NBA-high seven transition plays per game. And according to an analysis run at FiveThirtyEight’s request by Brittni Donaldson of SportVU, which tracks nearly everything that happens on an NBA court, there have been 413 instances1As of January 29. this season where, following a turnover or a defensive rebound in the backcourt, Westbrook took at least three dribbles and covered at least 20 feet with those dribbles. For context, John Wall, the next closest player, has done that 257 times. 200847.215.7 201154.515.5 SEASONSCORETURNOVER 200954.113.2 Outcomes of Russell Westbrook possessions when in transition Is College Basketball Broken? We Asked The Game’s Top Stats Guru Of course, there are practical reasons for a team like Memphis — which has also ranked among the top 10 on the defensive end of the floor for six of the past seven seasons — to kick the basketball. At a minimum, it forces a team to reset its offense with less time remaining on the shot clock. And at a maximum, it prevents an opposing player from catching an interior pass in a prime scoring area. (We’ve seen Tony Allen accidentally go a bit too far defending with his feet before.)That said, it’s more fun to try to connect the dots between Gasol’s kicked-ball violations and Gasol’s love for soccer. He hails from Spain, and he is an FC Barcelona fan. Inter turn their attention to Rafinha

Board Of Fish To Discuss Turbidity Issues With KenaiSoldotna Advisory Committee

first_imgRuffner will be presenting at the Kenai/Soldotna Fish & Game Advisory Committee meeting on Thursday, March 1. Last week the City of Kenai submitted a letter in response to the Kenai River Special Management Advisory Committees letter to the ADEC, an ordinance will be introduced at the Soldotna City Council tomorrow night to submit their own response as well. Ruffner will conduct a presentation to discuss the Kenai River water turbidity issues. He spoke to the Kenai City Council in January and stated that the proposal to list the Kenai River  is simply asking “are we making water muddier then we should be as associated with boat traffic?” According to Ruffner turbidity happens naturally, and is not “the end of the world”: “Muddy water can be bad for fish, recreation, or if you take that water and use it for drinking. So, turbidity in the river that we have been measuring over the past decade or so is not one of those things that screams that the sky is falling.” The Kenai/Soldotna Advisory Committee meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association building, located at 40610 K-Beach Road in Soldotna.center_img Facebook0TwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享In addition to the Cities of Kenai and Soldotna, Robert Ruffner with the Board of Fisheries is speaking out regarding the turbidity report released for the Kenai River by the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation. The 488’s successor builds upon an already excellent supercar with more power and a newer, flashier look. It still has a V8, but now it’s been tuned to put out about 710 horsepower and 568 pound-feet of torque, 50 hp more than the 488 GTB and about the same as the limited-edition 488 Pista, which debuted at Geneva last year. While the middle bit of the F8 Tributo might not look all that different from the 488, every other part of the body has been given a serious once-over. The nose looks longer and sleeker now, with some complicated ductwork in the lower part of the front bumper. Out back, the car clearly drew some inspiration from the larger 812 Superfast. As always, there’s a monstrous rear diffuser surrounding the tailpipes. There’s also a new polycarbonate engine cover that pays tribute to the hallowed F40.Enlarge ImageHard to believe it’s been almost five years since the 488 GTB debuted. Andrew Hoyle/Roadshow Ferrari says that the new bodywork contributes to a 10-percent improvement in aerodynamic efficiency. At the same time, the car is some 88 pounds lighter than the 488 it replaces, which means the car should seriously hustle. According to the automaker, the F8 Tributo will reach 62 miles per hour in just 2.9 seconds, continuing on until it reaches its top speed of 211 mph.The cabin’s been given a pretty hefty refresh, too. Ferrari says the dashboard, door panels and transmission tunnel have all been redesigned, and they look every bit as exotic as you’d expect from Ferrari. There’s also a new steering wheel, which has a smaller diameter than before, but it retains Ferrari staples like the “manettino” mode switch and the turn-signal buttons that replace the usual stalk. To keep passengers busy, there’s a 7-inch touchscreen display for them to fiddle with. While Ferrari hasn’t yet given a price for the F8 Tributo, for context’s sake, a 488 GTB retails around $250,000 before options and personalization. Odds are, buyers will probably spend a fair bit more than that.last_img read more

Forbid CocaCola from using groundwater demand Varanasi villagers

first_imgAlarmed by the massive usage of groundwater by the Coca-Cola bottling plant which has led to water scarcity in the area, as many as eighteen village councils in PM Modi’s constituency Varanasi are demanding the soft drink maker be forbid from drawing groundwater. The villages in Mehdiganj area of Varanasi district claimed that they have been seeing water shortages since the plant started its operations in 1999.”Elected village council heads represent the voice of the people, and they are clear that Coca-Cola is not welcome in Mehdiganj. It is time for Coca-Cola to pack up and leave,” said Amit Srivastava of the California-based India Resource Center, which is supporting the village councils in their cause.”Coca-Cola paints a pretty picture of itself internationally as a responsible user of water, but the reality in India is that it exploits groundwater at the expense of the poor, the women, children, farmers and livestock who have to live with less water because Coca-Cola mines groundwater in a water scarce area for profit,” Reuters quoted Srivastava as saying. As Mehdiganj is mainly agrarian, villagers in the area depend on groundwater for most of their requirements.  Coca-Cola, which uses groundwater for production purposes, competes with local people for water, according to environmentalists.Srivastava said the 18 village councils had written to the State Pollution Control Board, which gave a licence to Coca-Cola to open the plant, asking the officials to prevent the company from “extracting any more groundwater in the area.”The Central Ground Water Authority had declared Arajiline block, where the Coca-Cola bottling unit is located, as “over exploited” in 2011, he pointed out. However, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages said that a study undertaken by the Central Ground Water Board in 2012 did not find any evidence to prove that company’s groundwater usage had led to drying up of ponds, wells and hand pumps.”The Central Ground Water Board observed that this depletion was not due to withdrawal of ground water by Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Under NCLT heat RCom seeks time for Aircel merger tower business sale

first_img[Representational Image]Reuters FileReliance Communications (RCom) on Friday sought time from the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) as it hopes to convince China Development Bank (CDB) to withdraw its objection to the sale of its tower business and the proposed merger with Aircel, reports said on on Friday.RCom told NCLT that it is “running against time” to close the merger of its wireless business with Aircel, which will help it repay a majority of its loans to its creditors. CDB had objected to the $6-billion merger of debt-ridden telecom operators RCom and Aircel even after regulators, such as the Competition Commission of India (CCI), had cleared the deal. The bank, represented by senior counsel Darius Khambata at the NCLT, had sought a meeting of creditors with both companies ahead of the merger to discuss the loan-settlement terms.RCom senior counsel Janak Dwarkadas told the tribunal at a hearing that RCom is also in talks to address major lender China Development Bank’s (CDB) apprehensions about the deal. “(The) parties (Rcom and CDB) are negotiating as we speak. We are hopeful of some agreement.” The next date for hearing has been fixed for August 2.The Aircel deal and a stake sale in the tower business are expected to reduce RCom’s debt of around Rs 45,000 by 60 percent. The beleaguered telcom company needs to complete the merger as well as the tower sale within the seven-month breather it has from lenders, which expires in December 2017, according to an ET report on Friday.RCom owes the Chinese lender close to Rs 9,000 crore. The telco’s gross debt at the end of March 2017 was Rs 45,000 crore. Loans from local lenders stand at Rs 25,000 crore. RCom’s counsel Janak Dwarakadas said the company was hopeful of arriving at some arrangement with CDB.RCom’s representatives assured the tribunal that a creditor meeting would be called because it is important for the company to close the deal. “If you keep hearing till November, the debt will be declared NPA (non-performing assets),” Dwarkadas told the two-member bench comprising judges B S V Prakash Kumar and V Nallasenapathy, adding that nine of its lenders had given a go-ahead to the merger.ET had earlier reported that Aircel sourced equipment from Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE, which are backed by loans from the Chinese banks like CDB. Additionally, RCom has over $1 billion in loans from Chinese banks. According to the rules, a merger needs the approval of 75 percent of lenders. RCom had sought a waiver of the rule on the grounds that the deal with Aircel only affected shareholders, not lenders.last_img read more

Gang stole money from 5 more ATM booths

first_imgNew evidence of more ATM booth fraudulence is being surfaced following arrest of a gang of six foreign nationals recently, police officials have said.A gang of foreigners has stolen money from five more ATM booths of Dutch-Bangla Bank. The five booths are located in Radisson Hotel, Kakrail, Rampura DIT road and Nikunja area, police officials said. Scrutinising the footage of closed circuit television (CCTV), police suspects that 10-12 Ukrainian citizens are involved with the gang. The bank authorities have informed the investigating officers that Tk 1250,000 has been stolen from those booths.Analyzing CCTV footage the investigators have found that two groups of fraud were involved in stealing money from ATM booths, Detective Branch (DB) additional deputy commissioner of of Khilgaon zone Shahidur Rahman told Prothom Alo. They are working with technology specialists in investigating the case as technology was the main instrument of fraudulence, he added. Shahidur said, more information would be revealed once six arrested Ukraine nationals are put on remand for their alleged connection with the forgery. On 31 May, money was stolen from a booth of Madhya Badda. Other booths were stolen on 1 June. Tk 1.6 million were stolen from those booths.Investigating officers maintained that the gang stole money from ATM booths of at least 3 other private banks. But those 3 banks kept mum about the matter. They did not also inform Bangladesh Bank anything about the fraudulence. Detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Counter Terrorism and Transnational Unit’s (CTTC) cyber crime unit and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are jointly investigating the matter. On 1 June, 2 Ukrainian citizens went to steal money from a booth at Taltola area of Khilgaon. One of them was detained while another one managed to flee. Police at that night detained five more Ukraine citizens from Olio Dream Heaven Hotel in Panthapath. One member of this gang is still at large. Seven members of the gang landed in Dhaka by a Turkish Airlines plane on 30 May. On the following day, they had stolen Tk 400,000 from two booths of Madhya (middle) Badda. They were scheduled to left for India on 6 June. The investigators have requested the special branch of police to give information about the Ukrainian citizens who entered and left Bangladesh between15 and 30 May. A DB official seeking anonymity has said that a Bangladeshi technology expert living abroad has told them that this type of stealing from ATM booths has happened abroad. Cyber criminals take control of ATM booth by using a malware named ‘Tyupkin’. Members of the gang themselves control central server of the bank which gives directive while withdrawing the money. CID’s special superintendent (Organized Crime) Mollah Nazrul Islam said the criminals are member of an international gang named ‘Hidden Cobra’. They are linked with another gang named ‘Lazarus’, who were involved in Bangladesh Bank cyber heist in 2016. Nazrul said they got information from an international intelligence group that country’s ATM booths are vulnerable to frauds. They informed the bank authorities about it. Bangladesh Bank will arrange a meeting with all the banks about this incident, said central bank’s spokesperson Sirajul Islam. He said only DBBL has informed them of stealing money from their booths. DBBL’s managing director Abul Kashem Md Shirin could not be reached over phone for comment on the issue.*This report, originally published in Prothom Alo print edition, has been rewritten in English by Galib Ashraflast_img read more

The great Dodo weight debate

first_img Citation: The great Dodo weight debate (2011, April 18) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-04-great-dodo-weight-debate.html Dodo bird (Raphus Cucullatus) Back in the early 1990s, Andrew Kitchener from the National Museums Scotland in Edinburgh constructed a model based on bones and concluded the Dodo bird was far skinner than images had depicted them. His findings put the bird’s weight in the range of 10.5 to 17.5 kilograms. In a new study last month published in Naturwissenschaften, a team of researchers led by Delphine Angst from the Natural History Museum in Paris looked at 75 Dodo leg bones, including 25 femurs, tibiotarsus, and tarsometatarsus which they had collected from 14 different museums. By studying these bones, they came to the conclusion that the real body mass of the Dodo was really that of about 10 kilograms. However, in yet another study published again this month in Naturwissenschaften, another team says that Angst and her team were wrong in their analysis of the leg dimensions and that it is the femur that is more relevant. Their research suggests that the accurate weight would have been in a range of 9.5 to 18 kilograms.Paleo-ornithologist Antoine Louchart believes it is important that they get these figures correct as it will help scientists trying to understand just how birds evolve when living on islands when it comes to an increase or decrease of size. (PhysOrg.com) — The Dodo (Raphus cucullatus), a pigeon type bird that went extinct over 300 years ago is raising debate these last few months on just how slender or plump it really was. When the Dodo bird was first discovered by Dutch ships on the island of Mauritius, the drawings of the birds that were brought back showed a slender bird. However, over the years, the drawings showed a gradual plumping of the Dodo and this has been a big debate for years. The way of the digital dodo More information: The end of the fat dodo? Different departments may be open at different times (think a pharmacy inside a drug store or supermarket), and Google will now show that. This way, “you’ll know what time to pop by the pharmacy…, when food delivery begins at a nearby restaurant…, and what the service hours are at the auto dealership,” Aspinall wrote. These new features are available within Google Search and Maps. Amazon Blames Human Error for Sharing 1700 Alexa Audio Files

first_imgDecember 21, 2018 Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. This story originally appeared on PCMag 2 min read Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals This week, Amazon is having to apologize for allowing some 1,700 audio recordings made by one Alexa user to be shared with another Alexa user. The reason given is one of “human error.”As Reuters reports, an Amazon customer in Germany had asked Alexa to allow him to listen to his activities as logged by the voice assistant through is smart speaker. Instead, he was sent a link which allowed access to 1,700 audio files from another Alexa user he had no association with. The recordings apparently consisted of conversations between a man and woman. When the customer who received access to the recordings reported it to Amazon, he did not get an immediate response, but the files were removed from the provided link soon after. However, the recordings had already been downloaded by the customer leaving it up to him to delete them.Related: The Most Successful Companies Led By EntrepreneursAn Amazon spokesperson responded to news of the incident by explaining, “This unfortunate case was the result of a human error and an isolated single case … We resolved the issue with the two customers involved and took measures to further optimize our processes. As a precautionary measure we contacted the relevant authorities.”What’s surprising here is that a human was involved at all in the retrieval of audio files by an Alexa user. I’d expect that to be an automated process linked to the customer’s account, but clearly that isn’t the case, at least in this instance. The fact Amazon is referring to this as an isolated case suggests it may be an automated system, but human intervention was required which resulted in a mistake being made.If nothing else, this acts as a reminder that your data online is only private as long as the servers storing it and the gatekeepers guarding access to it don’t mess up. If they do, then your privacy is gone and all we’re left with is apologies and our privacy fears heightened. Register Now »last_img read more
