Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount have been in great formThere’s an old Irish proverb that says, ‘praise the young and they will flourish’, and Chelsea’s young players certainly deserve some acclaim for their performances in the opening weeks of this Premier League season. Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have all made their mark in some way so far this campaign, and their achievements in breaking into the first team at one of the league’s biggest clubs speaks volumes of the determination, and quality, of each. Abraham has enjoyed a veritable goal-rush in the first few weeks of the campaign, and his recent hat-trick away at Wolverhampton Wanderers felt like a Premier League coming-of-age for the young striker, who has performed admirably in the Championship in the last couple of seasons. Mount, who excelled at Derby County last season, has brought a youthful flair to Frank Lampard’s attack – his direct and purposeful style causing countless problems for Premier League defences. Tomori, who also spent last season on loan at Pride Park, has begun to find his feet at the highest level, and scored a screamer at Molineux to ensure that his name will be on the lips of Chelsea’s fans in games to come.Abraham has looked the part up frontAfter that 5-2 victory over Wolves, there was a beautiful shot of the three men walking off the pitch together, arm in arm. Afterwards, Abraham gave an insight into their conversation after the game: “We were discussing how we’ve all scored in the same game for Chelsea. We’ve dreamt of that since we were little boys, and we made it happen today.” The success of the Blues’ youth academy products has been heart-warming, and an antidote to the big-money, big-expectation nature of some of the Premier League’s top six clubs’ recruitment policies. The progression of Abraham, Mount and Tomori so far has seemed to teach a valuable lesson that promoting young talent can still yield results at big clubs. While there is a long way to go for those three to fully prove that assertion, the early signs are extremely encouraging. Of course, to view the opportunities afforded to Chelsea’s young players as solely a matter of choice or philosophy would be to ignore other significant factors. The transfer ban currently imposed on the club for breaching FIFA rules over the signing of foreign under-18 players has played a part in presenting first team chances to the likes of Abraham, Mount and Tomori. After losing Eden Hazard to Real Madrid in the summer, Chelsea were unable to reinvest that cash in the transfer market, and have had to depend on their returning loanees to bolster the squad.Injuries, too, have played a part. With club stalwart Willian remaining side-lined, that has given Mount the chance to claim a spot in Chelsea’s attacking areas. An injury to Antonio Rudiger has also allowed Tomori the chance to fill in at centre-half.Lampard has shown faith in Chelsea’s youngstersHowever, the opportunity to play first-team football for Chelsea is only that – an opportunity. Abraham, Mount and Tomori have grabbed their chances with both hands and performed at, and beyond, the level required of top level Premier League footballers. They have not shied away from the spotlight, rather they have flourished beneath it, and put to shame other players in the league who have been brought in for millions. Caution must be taken in describing any of those three young players as the finished article. That is far from true, and there will undoubtedly be mistakes and disappointing performances as they develop. What’s important is that Chelsea keep faith in their youth, and although Premier League title odds will cast them as outsiders, it is vital to back their youngsters through thick and thin. As in all aspects of life, we learn through our mistakes, and Chelsea’s young talent must be allowed to learn from theirs. Lampard seems the right man to help them along. Whatever he lacks in managerial experience, he perhaps makes up for with his knowledge of the club, and his knowledge of what it takes to perform at a consistently high level for Chelsea. He is said to be an excellent man-manager, and this aspect will be key in aiding the development of Abraham, Mount and Tomori. While there has been a certain haphazard quality to Chelsea’s performances in the opening weeks of the Premier League season, there are definitely signs that Lampard is sowing seeds of progress at the west London club. Chelsea must afford him time to learn and develop, just as he must afford Abraham and Mount the same. At a club where change has been the only constant over the last ten years, perhaps the time has come to fully embrace youth and lay the foundations for a period of stability. Abraham, Mount and Tomori have proved so far this season that there is value in trusting youth, whether it’s a young player or a young manager. They have shown that trust and faith bear fruit on the pitch, and that future club legends perhaps need not cost millions of pounds. (Visited 60 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 With over 2,000 extrasolar planets found around nearly as many stars, there’s still no place like home.“Why aren’t we finding other planetary systems like our own?” PhysOrg asked. While the menagerie of planets discovered by the Kepler spacecraft is exotic and curious, it primarily shows that our earth escaped certain death. Most planetary systems found by astronomers so far are quite different than our own. Many have giant planets whizzing around in a compact configuration, very close to their star. An extreme case in point is a newly found solar system that was announced on October 15, 2012 which packs five—count ’em—five planets into a region less than one-twelve the size of Earth’s orbit! An attending scientist at the American Astronomical Association’s Division of Planetary Sciences (DPS) meeting commented, “If we can understand this one, hopefully we can understand how these types of systems form and why most known planetary systems appear different from our own solar system.” Now, though, it is not clear. Most planets orbit very close in, but our sun’s planets are widely spaced. The fact that almost all solar systems found so far are so different than our own has astronomers wondering if we are, in fact, the oddballs. A study from 2010 concluded that only about 10 – 15 percent of stars in the Universe host systems of planets like our own, with terrestrial planets nearer the star and several gas giant planets in the outer part of the solar system. This might be a selection effect based on what our instruments are capable of detecting, but the discovery of so many close-in planets is sending theorists back to the drawing board. There are several theories about the formation of the large planets in our outer solar system which involves the planets moving and migrating inward and outward during the formation process. But why didn’t the inner planets, including Earth, move in closer, too?Fact is, “We don’t know why this didn’t happen in our solar system,” the spokesperson said. It’s going to require “a new generation of theories to explain why our solar system turned out so differently.”Several science sites like National Geographic gawked at another oddball system that finds a planet orbiting a four stars, leading to inevitable comparisons with Tatooine of the Star Wars mythology. The real story is that the planet also “challenges conventional notions of how planets form,” an astronomer said. “The discovery of these systems is forcing us to go back to the drawing board to understand how such planets can assemble and evolve in these dynamically challenging environments.”Update 10/17/2012: An earth-size planet has been found! –but you wouldn’t want to visit there. Space.com said that the earth-size planet orbits a member of the Alpha Centauri system closer than Mercury orbits the sun, making it a “hellish, lava world.” On Oct 18, Space.com used the opportunity of this discovery to list some of the requirements (and desirements) for a planet to be hospitable for life. This is not what the astrobiologists, astronomers and modelers expected. Migration was brought into the nebular hypothesis in response to discoveries, not as a prediction of those discoveries. What have “conventional notions” done for you lately? The sight of experts rushing back to their drawing boards implies that planetary evolution theory is in a mess. Hot Jupiters abound, requiring them to posit rapid migration toward the star. Who knows how many fell in? On the way in, if indeed they migrated, they would have sent rocky planets with interior orbits careening out of their stellar systems.Another problem posed by the hot Jupiters and closely-orbiting rocky planets is the realization that planets had to form much more quickly than the nebular hypothesis allowed. Instead of slow “core accretion,” theorists invented new ideas out of whole cloth, like “disk instability,” trying to get gas giants to form in decades or centuries instead of millions of years, to allow them time to clear out their orbital debris before the nebula dragged them inward. This is another example of how inept astronomers are at explaining planets despite their admirable skill at observing and describing them. Virtually every planet in our solar system surprised them: none of them fit the predictions of the nebular hypothesis and billions of years.Meanwhile, here our earth sits, safe inside our sun’s habitable zone, as most of us pay these cosmic billiard games little mind. Instead of thanking your lucky star, you might try thanking your Creator.
A group of investors has acquired all rights and trademarks for the shuttered news weekly Beverly Hills 213 with plans to resurrect the title as a quarterly, glossy magazine by September. The new owners—Jim Couri, president of investment firm Couri Trading Company; Karl Sanford, a Southern California-based web developer; and Scams Inc., an investigative news website—will begin by relaunching BeverlyHills213.com within the next sixty days. According to Couri, who also founded Duty Free International, the new owners are expecting to double the site’s page views, which ranked at about a million per month before shutting down due to the previous owner’s illness.Print distribution, he says, was at about 60,000, delivered to hotel lobbies and homes in affluent cities in the area, including Beverly, Bel Air and Brentwood. According to Couri, the new distribution will expand to 70,000-75,000, with the goal of placing the magazine in “every hotel room in Beverly Hills.” Hotels that sign on will receive custom editions with their own ads featured on the back cover. In terms of content, Couri says the magazine will feature more celebrity coverage, interviews and, potentially, celebrity-written columns. “This is a great franchise based on the demographics,” says Couri. “The whole idea is we want to make something really special for the Beverly Hills area to not only enjoy reading but reading and keeping.”Part-owner Sanford will serve as chief operating officer, while former employees Arlene Walsh, a popular gossip columnist, Adam Albirght-Hanna, editor, and Anna Lozano, production manager and senior designer, will return to the publication.
Exceptional Women in Publishing (EWIP) will hold its 6th Annual Women’s Leadership Conference, a popular media, technology and publishing industry event, in March with a slew of fresh ideas on the theme “How to Move Forward: Women Leaders in Media.”“The goal of this year’s conference program is to illuminate the many ways women are moving forward in the industry,” says Máire Walsh, EWIP president, in a statement. For the first time, the non-profit educational organization will be accepting proposals for session topics at the conference. Founded in 1998, EWIP was created to address the ambitions of women and girls in the magazine publishing industry with a concentration on education, empowerment and community support.“By opening up the program for public submissions, we will be able to tap into the depth of experience and talent in the publishing community,” Walsh says.Applications should be submitted electronically through the Convene A Session form by Nov. 15, 2013. Session selections will be announced on Dec. 12, 2013 and the conference will be held March 5, 2014 in San Francisco with more than 250 attendees expected.

Indian conglomerate Adani Enterprises Sunday received approval from Australia’s Queensland state government to go ahead with the proposed AUD 10 billion (US$7.7 billion/about Rs 51,000 crore) coal project. The company won the permission to conduct mining activities in certain Australian coal reserves. Annastascia Palaszczuk, Queensland Premier, said Adani has got the permission to mine 11 billion tonnes of coal. In addition, the Gautam Adani-led group can build haul roads, workshops, pipelines and power lines in association with the mine, Reuters reported. “Some approvals are still required before construction can start, and ultimately committing to the project will be a decision for Adani,” Palaszczuk was quoted as saying by the agency.Meanwhile, according to some analysts, that the Gujarat-based company would find it tough to raise financing for the project in midst of a sinking coal market. The Adani group was reportedly facing legal troubles in Australia as environmentalists had lodged challenges on numerous fronts in the month of November last year. They had claimed that the project would harm the Great Barrier Reef and contribute to climate change. Last week, India’s Finance Minister Arun Jaitley was visiting the island nation. He expressed hope that the Adani coal mine project would receive the due approvals and get a green signal, International Business Times, India reported.[1 lakh = 100,000 | 1 crore = 10 million | 100 crore = 1 billion]
