Traffic Down at Post-Paywall New York Times [STATS]

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… At the end of March, The New York Times finally activated the paywall that it had announced a year earlier. The publication took a “porous” approach to charging users, letting readers access up to 20 articles a month for free and allowing for links from social networks like Facebook or Twitter to pass through without counting. Still, onlookers have wondered what the effect of the wall would be on the site.According to Web traffic measurement firm Hitwise, the numbers are in and traffic has certainly dipped in the nearly two weeks since the wall was put in place.Hitwise examined traffic to the New York Times website according to two metrics, visits and pageviews, by comparing the 12 days prior to the pay wall to the 12 days after. While pageviews are defined as any time that page is loaded, even if multiple times by the same person, visits are broken into “sessions”, so if the same person visited the site once in the morning and then once later that day, it would count as two visits. Browsing a number of pages in a short period of time, however, would equal one visit but multiple pageviews. So what were the results? According to Hitwise, the site has seen “a decrease in the overall visits between 5% and 15%” and “a decline in total page views which ranged between 11% and 30%.” Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Tags:#news#web center_img Hitwise notes the general decline in visits, speculating that the reason for the increase on Saturday, April 9, was “likely due to visitors seeking news around the potential government shutdown and ongoing budget discussions.” Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Similarly, pageviews decreased by anywhere from 11% to 30%. Surely, none of this is as bad as the now-fabled implementation of a paywall by the Newsday, however, which resulted in just 35 subscriptions in the three months after it was put in place.Hitwise also points out that networks like Facebook and Twitter could be used as a clever way to workaround the paywall, but that “to date there has not been a significant difference in the share of upstream traffic from both search and social networks to NYTimes.com before and after the launch of the paywall.”Disclosure: ReadWriteWeb is a syndication partner of the New York Times Technology section. mike melansonlast_img read more

How to Start a Mastermind Group

first_imgIt’s been said that you will become the composite of the books you read and the five people with whom you spend the most time. If you study the concept of memetics, the way ideas spread from person to person, you’ll find evidence to support this assertion. Even without any validation, anyone who has a mastermind group will tell you how important it has been to their growth, their development, and their success.A good mastermind group will help you see how much potential you have, allow you to share best practices and strategies, provide a sense of camaraderie, and create a sense of personal accountability. I don’t want to extol the virtues here, but rather share with you how you start one.The WhoIt’s essential that you find people who are growth-oriented for a mastermind. The people in your mastermind must be driven to be more, do more, have more, and contribute more (my shorthand for striving to reach your full potential). It isn’t enough that they want the camaraderie alone. They need to bring something to the table. You can’t build an effective mastermind with people who aren’t striving, or who are merely drifting. You also want to find people who have a powerful locus of control, people who believe that they are acting on the world, not allowing the world to work on them. You will be able to identify these people by the fact that they always have projects followed by more projects. A mastermind is a collection of people who are empowered, intrinsically motivated and driven. The people you invite into a mastermind must also be willing to share and teach. There are some people possessed by a scarcity mindset. They are not willing to share because your success might diminish their success. You need people who are confident that sharing with you will help you improve, and your sharing with them will benefit them.I have described myself as a scientist. I try things to see if I can make them work. It’s good to have people who try things and measure the results in your mastermind. The more experiments your mastermind members are running, the more insights you can share. An excellent and effective mastermind requires the trust that you can share your successes and your failures, both of which provide lessons and feedback. You can’t share things like your financial results if you don’t trust the people in your mastermind group. You can’t share your strategies and tactics with people who won’t respect what you have shared in confidence. You have to be able to share and to be transparent, especially around your challenges. The WhatA good mastermind has frequent, but not too-frequent, meetings, always with an agenda. Like any useful meeting, you need to prepare your thoughts, ideas, challenges, opportunities, and questions. Starting the session with a primary question to answer is one way to get the most out of each meeting. You are going to leave with takeaways, and you’ll need time to gather feedback before the next meeting.Your mastermind will invariably share strategies with which you are unfamiliar but equally important will be their network. They will know people who can help you, providing you with referrals for service providers you might need, or referrals and introductions to people who need your services. You will know people and have relationships that will benefit them as well. What might be the most useful outcome of belonging to a mastermind group is being challenged by your peers. Your mastermind members will have different ideas and different opinions, all shaped by their different experiences, biases, and preferences. You will find the most value in being challenged to look at what you’re doing through a different lens.Interview Potential MembersYou are going to want to interview potential members for fit. You have to want to spend time with the members of your group. The more you like and respect the members of your mastermind group, the higher the odds of you helping everyone in the group to grow towards their full potential. Spend time together, and see if there is chemistry.Explore what they are reading, as non-readers don’t often make the best members. Ask questions about the new things they are trying in their life and in their business to test for their desire to improve and determine their motivation. You also want people who spend time thinking. People who write—even if they write for themselves—often make good mastermind group members. You don’t want more than six people in your group unless you are part of a moderated mastermind group. You need time to share, and larger groups tend to be more unwieldy.“But wait,” you say. “I am a salesperson or sales manager, not an entrepreneur. Can I start a mastermind of salespeople or sales managers?” Not only is it true that you can start a mastermind, but you should also do so with great haste. If you want to improve your performance, a group of people dedicated to doing so and sharing their experience will accelerate your growth. Start a mastermind.last_img read more

NGT row: activists irked by State’s justification

first_imgPANAJI: Activists from the State on Saturday expressed strong displeasure at the State government’s justification for shifting the jurisdiction of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Goa-related cases from the western zone bench in Pune to Delhi.Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Friday that the State government had sought the transfer of cases to Delhi, saying that the Capital was better connected to Goa.The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) changed the jurisdiction for Goa-related cases in a notification on August 10. Activist and lawyer Aires Rodrigues said the decision had been taken with “ulterior motives”, and was a clear attempt to deny justice to the common man. Rubbishing Mr. Parrikar’s claim that the government does not have a legal set-up in Pune, Mr. Rodrigues said proceedings at the Pune bench had been running smoothly all these years. The Goa For Dabolim Only, a movement opposing a second airport in Goa led by Fr. Ermito Rebello, said the government has acted against the people who have been working to save the fragile ecology of the State.Claude Alvares, director of environmental NGO Goa Foundation, told The Hindu, “The NGT has not been set up for the government of Goa, but for the people who are concerned about the damage to the environment. Petitioners do not have the money to travel to Delhi for the hearing, and then to spend more on lawyers and logistics.” He said the Goa Foundation has also written to the NGT chairman to set up a bench in Goa. Activist Kashinath Shetye, who is one of the petitioners in several environmental cases before the NGT, has challenged the MoEF notification, claiming that the Ministry has joined hands with the Goa government to deny Goans access to the tribunal. He said doing so without hearing or notice to affected parties was arbitrary, unjust and illegal. Environmental activist Savio J.F. Correia from Vasco, who heads the Citizens Group, Goa, and Edwin Mascarenhas from Mormugao have also opposed the government’s decision. The matter is slated to come up before the Bombay High Court at Goa under a suo motu public interest litigation (PIL) on September 5. The High Court has clubbed the petitions filed by several activists, including the Federation of Rainbow Warriors, Mr. Shetye and the Goa Foundation, with the suo motu PIL.last_img read more
