competitive international the 24-year-old was the cornerstone of a superb Irish defensive display against Italy that sent them go through to the knockout stage of the Euros for the first time It was a far cry from his first call-up in May 2010 when an accidental clash with the goalkeeper of Ireland’s amateur national side in a training game ruptured the blood supply to his liver necessitating life-saving surgery Right back Seamus Coleman who captained Ireland against Italy in the absence of John O’Shea paid tribute to Duffy after the Italy game “For him to be back on the pitch is massive but to put in a performance like that was incredible” he said Like manager Martin O’Neill Duffy comes from the city of Derry in Northern Ireland and following his solid display the coach is unlikely to drop him when Ireland meet host nation France in Lyon on Sunday Far from being disappointed at being pitted against one of the tournament favourites Duffy who says he does not remember the incident that almost cost him his life is relishing the game “That’s what we’re here for We’re here to play big teams we’ve already played three great teams already We’re waiting for it” he said LATE GOAL The Irish started their campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sweden before being thrashed 3-0 by Belgium and they needed a late goal from Robbie Brady against a depleted Italy side to get through “The team spirit is brilliant we always feel like we’re going to get that one chance” Duffy said “It’s drilled into us that never-give-up attitude and we don’t The team spirit is there it’s just brilliant to be involved in” READ: Standings Group stageclassification Duffy gave a dominant display in one of Ireland’s last pre-Euro friendlies against Netherlands in Dublin but found himself consigned to the bench when the tournament started with O’Shea and Ciaran Clark preferred at centre back But after the drubbing by Belgium O’Neill dropped that pairing replacing them with Duffy and Richard Keogh “I always kept myself ready and I always knew an injury away or … you never know what happens in football” he said Having said himself that he was a million miles from a place in the squad back in the spring the Blackburn Rovers stopper is still trying to take in the fact that he is playing at the Euros “It’s hard to sum up at the minute I didn’t play a minute in the qualifying then football changes so quickly I’m grateful to the boss for picking me and putting me in the squad” he said “I’ve thrived off it I thrive off big games and I think I did alright (against Italy)” Having taken just 10 weeks to recover from his life-threatening injury Duffy says he would welcome the chance to improve by going up against the best France has to offer “I can only do what I can do out there I was comfortable (against Italy) I thought the whole team played well” he said “I can always get better at things and improve I’m still at an early stage in my career and the more times I can play I can get better” overpowering as India’s lowest social caste keeps up protests against deep-rooted discrimination Representational image Reuters Dalits previously known as ‘untouchables’ stopped collecting carcasses more than two months ago in Gujarat state after the brutal beating of four Dalit youths accused of killing a cow considered sacred in India A video of the public flogging carried out by upper-caste cow-protection vigilantes in Gujarat went viral triggering outrage across the country "Our Dalit brothers were thrashed so severely merely for doing what has been their work for centuries" said Somabhai Yukabhai 49 among those who have stopped collecting and skinning dead cows a traditional and grisly job restricted to Dalits "I would rather starve to death than collect the dead cows" said the father of three as a dog feasted on calf remains on the outskirts of Gujarat’s largest city Ahmedabad "The fight now is about our dignity We will not sit quietly now" he added The carcasses are seen by critics as an embarrassing eyesore for Hindu nationalist Modi who has long hailed Gujarat as a shining example of India’s economic progress His party also risks losing votes at upcoming elections because of the fury about the attack in July Dalits have sizeable numbers in Gujarat and two other states gearing up for next year’s polls experts say The attack during which the youths were stripped to their waists before being flogged shows violence is still being meted out to Dalits six decades after India banned caste discrimination Authorities have concluded a wild lion not the four youths killed the cow and the youngsters were legally skinning the animal for its leather Police this month formally filed charges against their attackers The incident was a tipping point for many Dalits who feel they can no longer tolerate such attacks said charismatic Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani "Economic exploitation on one hand and caste-based violence on the other has completely frustrated them especially the youth" said Mevani a 35-year-old lawyer "The Una (village) incident proved to be the last straw" The violent protests that erupted in July over the attack leaving one police officer dead have passed for now But Dalits have kept up their strike against collecting the carcasses although municipal authorities have taken over in some areas AFP reporters saw about 10 dead cows next to a main road leading into the city Cows roam freely in Hindu-majority India and killing them is illegal in most states Dalits who form 166 percent of the national population roughly 200 million people performed the most dirty and dangerous jobs such as removing dead animals and human waste under India’s caste system Determined by birth the centuries-old system dictated hierarchy in Indian society including profession and level of education available Despite the ban discrimination remains rife: Some 27 percent of Indians reported regularly carrying out "untouchability" — such as refusing Dalits entry to their kitchen or setting aside different utensils for them — according to a survey last year by India’s National Council of Applied Economic Research and America’s University of Maryland Reported crimes against Dalits increased 44 percent between 2010 and 2014 official figures show A Dalit boy was burnt to death in 2014 for letting his goat stray onto land owned by an upper-caste farmer Though some experts cautioned that the increase could be down to growing awareness of the need to report atrocities rather than a jump in actual cases But aspirations of and opportunities for young Dalits have grown after years of India’s booming economic growth with hundreds of thousands flocking to cities for work and study Literacy rates among Dalits are 66 percent nationally while government jobs and university places are reserved for a string of different low castes under affirmative action policies At a Dalit settlement dotted with ramshackle brick houses near Ahmedabad residents spoke of facing discrimination on a daily basis "We are not allowed to enter temples fetch water from public taps or drink from the same cups at tea stalls" said Babulal Mackwan a shoemaker Activist Mevani said Dalits would end their strike over the carcasses only if the state government vowed to stamp out caste oppression and gave five acres (two hectares) of land to every Dalit family affected At a skinning field strewn with cow remains in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district Dalits said the strike was hurting them financially Dalits have traditionally and legally made a living from the carcasses — including by selling hides to tanneries and fat to soap makers But they said they were tired of being relentlessly targeted by hard line Hindus belonging to cow-protection squads and were prepared to keep up the strike "Even when we are transporting hides or bones we are targeted by cow mobs We are asked to cough up bribes or face beatings" said local Dalit activist Natubhai Parmar He added: "But we will not bow down this time We are prepared for a long fight" A girl who owned two dogs had to suddenly go to her village She left the dogs with a girl who ran a dog boarding house and paid her an advance of Rs 1200 at the rate of Rs 150 a day Two days later she was informed through email that the dog had run away and they were not taking responsibility as the dog was “badmaash” The boarding house is in an abandoned chemical factory in Faridabad run by the daughter of the owner She simply locks the dogs in a few rooms She has one helper No personalised forms no doctor no diets no mattresses no bathing no de-ticking no attempt to make the dogs comfortable When we confronted her her excuse was that she was doing “seva” Another person left his dog for a week ata boarding house in Noida while he went on a trip The dog started vomiting at night The vet refused to treat it because he had no medical history The night staff had no access to the owner’s phone number so he was only informed the next day and then the vet was on leave The owner flew back immediately but by then the dog had died Representational image Reuters In have received so many complaints from people who have left their dogs in boarding houses They have got them back covered with ticks sick with a kennel cough parvo or distemper some have been mauled in a fight with other dogs or the owners have been informed that the dog has run away or died “Run away” if the dog is highly pedigreed could mean the owner of the boarding house has sold it to a breeder This has become an unregulated backyard industry with no healthcare or management training While breeders and traders are now regulated boarding kennel operators are still out of the loop — though not for long Your pet depends on you to take care of her/him even when you are not there If you are going to leave them with a boarding kennel you must make sure it is not like the ones described above Boarding kennel stress is real Imagine taking a young child to a strange place and leaving it with people it doesn’t know The child will more often than not become distressed and upset The same thing can happen to dogs A boarding kennel environment can be especially hard on nervy anxious dogs Signs of kennel stress can manifest in dogs in many ways: excessive barking andwhining loss of appetite Change of diet may also cause vomiting and diarrhoea constant licking of the lips pacing anddepression What you want is a facility that will care for your dog as if it was their own Here is the checklist when you need to put him in a boarding house: 1 Your pet should know basic commands and be socialised around people and pets 2 Accustom your pet to longer kennel stays by first boarding her for a weekend This allows you to assess the place before boarding your pet for an extended period 3 Your pet should be vaccinated The core vaccines for dogs are rabies distemper parvovirus and adenovirus and canine kennel cough (Bordatella) Flea and tick prevention should be done 4 Required vaccinations for cats include rabies feline panleukopenia calicivirus and rhinotracheitis Cats that are allowed to socialize with other cats should have negative feline leukaemia and feline AIDS status 5 Take your pet’s medications and special food (if any) your veterinarian’s phone number and contact information for you and a local backup Also take something that smells of you 6 Inform the staff about any medical or behaviour problems your pet has such as epilepsy or fear of thunder The boarding house: 1 Ask your veterinarian to recommend one Since they talk to pet lovers every day they know Ask dog owners and look at online lists Check the web for any experiences others may have had with this facility After selecting a few kennels confirm that they can accommodate your pet for specific dates and can address your pet’s special needs If you’re satisfied schedule a visit 2 Always ask to tour the entire facility If they refuse leave as they are probably hiding bad infrastructure 3 A good kennel should be well lit and airy with sufficient ventilation and temperature control The living and playing areas should look and smell clean and be free of waste and urine The flooring should not permit the absorption of fluids 4What kind of paperwork does the place have Do they ask you any details about the dog – diet exercise sleep medications whether the dog wants to socialise and any other pertinent information If the facility does not insist on vaccinations leave immediately 5 Notice the staff handling of the animals and the relationship between staff and other dogs during the time of your tour A wagging tail is usually attached to a happy dog They should be able to tell you details about every dog and cat under their care What is their experience and are they trained in first aid and aggressive dog handling 5 Does each dog have his own adequately sized indoor-outdoor run or an indoor run and a schedule for exercise Does a fenced area for adequate exercise exist and what are the provisions for daily exercise This is the law: If a dog is housed at a facility without sensory contact with another dog it shall be provided with positive physical contact with humans at least once daily The opportunity for exercise may be provided in a number of ways (i) Providing access to a run or open area (ii) Adequate exercise either in a fenced area or on a leash with a person (iii) Exercising for at least 30 minutes twice per day (iv) Socialising with people at suitable intervals equalling at least three hours per day for adult and five hours for puppies less than four months of age; How large is the community area Check outdoor areas to see that there aren’t any gaps in the wall or fence where your dog especially if it is a small dog can run out of 6 Is bedding provided How often is it washed Bedding should be clean soft and free of any stains or crusting that may have occurred because of urine or faeces 7 Are cats housed away from dogs 8 Is there enough space for cats to move around comfortably 9 Is there enough space between the litter box and food bowls 10 How often are pets fed What is the food 11 Can the owner bring a pet’s special food 12 What veterinary services are available Is the vet experienced What will they do if your animal gets diarrhoea breaks a toenail or won’t eat What are the protocols if your dog needs medical attention Is there first aid medicine in the place and is anyone trained to diagnose and use it All medication must be stored in clean cabinets with well-fitting doors or other suitable containers with well-fitting lids All medication must be clearly marked or labelled Does the kennel have procedures in place so your pet gets her medication at the proper time 13 Are services available such as grooming training bathing 14 Will someone be on the premises at all times Is someone checking in on the animals at night 15 If your pet has health issues like a weak bladder blindness deafness arthritis can the staff look after them These pets will need more personal attention and more time and patience to care for 16 Is the kitchen clean Does it have a clean fridge What food is there and how do the owners of the boarding house accommodate personal diets Are the food receptacles clean 17 How is the place being cleaned What type of cleaning products are used What is done with the excreta 18 Is water available at all times 19 Does the facility have fire detection and extinguishers 20 What is the tick situation 21 Does the facility have actual rooms and not just basic fence cages with shared walls Shared fence walls allow your dog and its neighbour to get into a barking competition A stressed out dog won’t enjoy its time at the hostel if he feels intimidated during the entire stay Rooms should be spacious and size appropriate for your dog breed Doors and gates should be secure so that dogs are kept safe 22 How will your dog be exercised Some kennels walk the dogs others let them out to run in large compounds with other dogs If the latter are they supervised by someone physically present Even friendly dogs can fall out and a dogfight may ensue Small and big dogs should not be exercised together in groups Is there some system in place to divide dogs by play style size age etc to keep them safe and happy To join the animal welfare movement contact [email protected] wwwpeopleforanimalsindiaorg State-run broadcasters Doordarshan and All India Radio find themselves sandwiched as two political powers — one seeking to usurp and the other firm on retaining domination — prepare to lock horns in the electoral battle in Tripura due in six months There are other players in the ring but the bulls with bigger horns matter for now Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar Image courtesy: PIB The Independence Day speech row which suddenly catapulted the tiny northeastern state and its chief minister to national headlines is another political drill in disguise to draw maximum mileage ahead of the polls to the 60-seat Assembly BJP’s posture as a conqueror may worry the Left Front in Tripura but it would be akin to building castles in the air if one expects the party that won 49 seats in the 2013 Assembly to surrender meekly Despite allegations by the BJP that the speech — which was not aired by the national broadcasters on 15 August — is an outright unnecessary political assault on the central government the chief minister rejected the charge vehemently "I have not said anything about the BJP What I have commented upon is the stand of the Prasar Bharati with regard to my speech recorded on 12 August scheduled to be telecast on 15 August morning which they gagged That is undemocratic authoritarian and an expression of intolerance" Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar told Firstpost from Agartala Significantly enough although the speech was not allowed to be aired by Doordarshan and AIR the criticism of their action by the chief minister (who called it "undemocratic authoritarian and an expression of intolerance") carried the same sentiment of the recorded speech It now probably got delivered with a bigger bang "Conspiracies and attempts are underway to create an undesirable complexity and divisions in our society; to invade our national consciousness in the name of religion caste and community by inciting passions to convert India into a particular religious country and in the name of protecting cow" Sarkar had apparently said in his Independence Day speech which was shared by CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury on Twitter The text of the Independence Day speech by Tripura CM Manik Sarkar: blacked out by DD & AIR after orders from Delhi #UndeclaredEmergency pictwittercom/90ECzoqLMQ — Sitaram Yechury (@SitaramYechury) August 16 2017 Soon after the controversy erupted the chief minister firmly said that he did not make any reference to or named any political party Literally speaking that cannot be contested but the speech itself was loaded with connotations that were meant to be read between the lines It was quite obvious for the politically-inclined that the speech did target the BJP and right-wing fringe elements Unperturbed by the clamour on the content of the speech the chief minister made it clear that it was the national broadcasters who requested for a speech from him which was supposed to be aired before the official flag hoisting on Independence Day "I have not said anything with regard to any political party in this regard because it was recorded by All India Radio and Doordarshan Agartala on the auspices of Prasar Bharati They have actually raised the objection with regard to my recorded speech and they said that it should be ‘reshaped’ otherwise it can’t go I have to confine my comments on this I won’t like to comment on other things It is not the proper occasion" Sarkar said treading a rather thin line between political and non-political while indicating that he was not willing to say anything on the BJP However the chief minister also clearly said "nothing of that sort" has happened yet when asked if the public broadcasters have tendered any apology Finding itself under tremendous scrutiny for its role in the whole episode Doordarshan Kendra Agartala did try to wriggle itself out free by issuing a letter to the editors of national dailies only to shoot itself in the foot In a release addressed to the editors of all national level dailies on Wednesday UK Sahoo head of office Doordarshan Kendra Agartala claimed that "the News Unit of the local station of Doordarshan at Agartala has given wide coverage to the public address of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Tripura and the development activities of the State Government" "On August 15 2017 Doordarshan also gave wide coverage to the Chief Minister’s Independence Day programme and telecast report running to 29 minutes and 45 seconds Out of which the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s speech coverage was for 12 minutes This was telecast at 1900 hrs" Sahoo said The chief minister simply refuted all the claims made by the Doordarshan station head in Agartala "That is also not correct I have received it (the Doordarshan letter to the editors) It has also been clarified from our side They have diverted the question What they are saying is that on 15 August at Agartala at 910 in the morning they (covered) the state central function where the chief minister addressed the people Not only this so many programmes were held On 15 August in the evening they did telecast the programme of the state which was organised in connection with the observance of Independence Day In that programme they have also telecasted the speech delivered by the chief minister on the Assam Rifles ground" he said The chief minister called the letter by Doordarshan a sheer attempt to deflect from the real issue "That is not the point from our side Our point was this was what happened to the speech recorded on 12 August which was scheduled to be telecast on 15 August morning on which they have raised the question They have not answered anything Actually now they are trying to mislead the people They have now realised the reaction of the sensible people of our country Because of that gusto they have tried to escape They have adopted this tactic now" Sarkar said It is quite evident that Doordarshan and AIR are mere pawns in this David and Goliath contest Taken aback by this unusually sharp and indirect attack by the chief minister the BJP did try to match in response "Whatever he said it is highly objectionable The speech during the flag-hoisting has to be non-political The chief minister must talk about achievements and challenges What he did was to criticise the Centre in extremely bad words The Tripura chief minister was mannerless in his conduct However we have not decided on our next course of action" BJP central observer for Tripura Sunil Deodhar had told Firstpost Although the poll bugle has not been sounded officially yet battle lines are clearly drawn with BJP going out all guns blazing to end the four-term continuous trot of CPM strongman and Chief Minister Manik Sarkar The party made its intentions already clear when in a swift and stealthy operation it took Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress by surprise and roped in all six Trinamool MLAs to its fold Aware of the opponent’s Mossad-like techniques to outfox its political enemies Sarkar knows very well that he must up the ante to prevent a ripple from becoming a wave The battle has only begun in Tripura and Narendra Modi is yet to land By: Team Express FoodIE | Mumbai | Published: April 4 2016 6:13 pm SLOVENIA: Stara Fuzina
