Prime Minister Skerrit to visit hurricane ravaged Texas

first_imgPrime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says he intends to visit the hurricane ravaged city of Houston where residents took a battering from Hurricane Harvey over the weekend.“I wish to express my empathy and solidarity with the government of the United States of America and more particularly, the residents of the state of Texas, Houston more specifically,” Skerrit said on Tuesday, describing the situation as “a catastrophic disaster which took place in Texas. We know very well in Dominica the extent of dislocation, the extent of damage that these natural disasters can cause, and just almost exactly two years ago, we suffered a similar fate.”“I wish to express my empathy and solidarity with the government of the United States of America and more particularly, the residents of the state of Texas, Houston more specifically.”Skerrit said that when he looked at the thousands of families that have been affected,” it really, really touches my heart as a world citizen, and I know that we have several Dominican families resident in Houston.“ I have had the opportunity to reach out directly to some of them and to express our concern and indicated to them the willingness of Dominica to assist where we can. I intend to visit Houston myself personally at the earliest opportunity to meet with Dominican residents there and to see how we can assist in restoring their lives to normalcy.”Help for Dominicans in Houston The Dominica prime minister said that one of the things he would like to propose “is for us to reach out to our new citizens, in particular, those high-net-worth citizens and see whether we can have some fund raising drive to assist our Dominican citizens who have been affected by this tragic flooding and so forth.“Just looking at what is on the news, it is really touching, and speaking to Dominicans who were affected, who had to be rescued by small boats and pubic authorities, they recounted to me the loss of their homes, their belongings, their homes are flooded completely.”Skerrit said that he also has friends who are resident in Houston.“They themselves had to be rescued indicating that they had lost everything; some of them recently bought homes. So it really a tragedy and we want to express our solidarity with the President, the government and people of the United States, the Governor and Mayor of the city of Houston.“We want to reach out to them and say that our prayers and thoughts are with them in this very difficult circumstance, and for any country, notwithstanding the size and the economy of the United States of America, no matter how small or large you are, you will be affected, and these disasters, you never know when they are coming.”Skerrit reminded his nationals that the Caribbean is still in the hurricane season and “we in Dominica have to continue to be vigilant and the rest of the Caribbean. We are really sorry for what happened.”last_img read more

Counted out: Andrew Gillum acknowledges Ron DeSantis’ election as Florida governor.

first_imgAfter the preliminary results of the Nov 6 general elections, and a machine recount, on Saturday Florida’s Democratic candidate for Florida governor finally conceded defeat to Republican Ron DeSantis.Having lost to DeSantis by a slim margin of 33,400 votes based on the preliminary results of the mid-term elections, Gillum withdrew his original concession given to DeSantis on election night and agreed to a machine recount of the ballots that were cast. The recount was in accordance with Florida law which indicates if a candidate loses an election by a margin of less than  0.50 percent a recount is required. At the conclusion of the state-wide machine recount on Thursday, November 15, it was evident that Gillum had not made any significant inroads in the original vote count, and that DeSantis had retained the winning margin.Making his final concession in a video livestreamed on Facebook from Tallahassee on Saturday, Gillum, accompanied by his wife R-Jai, said, “We said we would fight until the last vote is counted. Now that we are rounding that process out, R. Jai and I wanted to take a moment to congratulate Mr. DeSantis on becoming the next governor of the great state of Florida.”In his video message Gillum said Florida’s need to be updated and brought “into the 21st century.” With his failure in his quest to be governor, Gillum now returns to his post as Mayor of Tallahassee, but said “There will be more to come. This fight for Florida continues.”His wife R-Jai also said, “This is not the last of Andrew and R. Jai Gillum.”After Gillum’s concession, DeSantis tweeted: “This was a hard-fought campaign. Now it’s time to bring Florida together.”last_img read more

Football clubs disengage with Facebook

first_img Related Articles Facebook’s decision to discontinue paying football clubs for live streams has inevitably led to a backlash of clubs becoming disinterested in the social media site.A plethora of teams that previously enjoyed heavy involvement in Facebook, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United, are now seemingly contemplating investments in alternative outlets such as Instagram and YouTube. The decision to cease paying clubs to produce live content was a result of considerable low engagement from supporters on the site. Last season, a live streamed Barcelona press conference managed to pull in just over 500,000 views, a minuscule amount compared to the 100 million or so Facebook fans of the club. The proven profitability of mid roll advertisements has led to Facebook shifting its priority away from live streams and more towards the purchasing of long form content, an area in which Facebook have expressed a specific interest is with regards to documentaries about fan culture.Although in the short term the attempts of Facebook to profit from this genre of video will serve to wane the site’s relationship with football clubs, in the long term, the possibility of an exodus of club’s interest from Facebook may prove premature.Monetary gain may not be decisive factor in luring the world’s biggest clubs back onto the site, even if this means they’re forced to adjust the content they provide.Speaking to SBC, Sebastian Jansson, Paid Social Media Manager of LeoVegas said: “I am not entirely sure that the Football clubs will move away from Facebook, as their real currency in this situation are all the fans out there.“Those fans will stay on Facebook until another platform emerges that will take their attention, and when that happens all the football clubs will probably start shifting their distribution accordingly.“One of the main reasons why football is such a huge sport, is because of the massive fan-base that it has amassed all over the world. Currently Facebook is the platform that has the vastest global usage, thus, being one of few places where they can reach and interact with their fans.“Due to that, I am certain that we will see a continuous relationship between football clubs and Facebook, and that will only change when the fans no longer use the platform.”Furthermore, bookmakers may be incentivised in the same way that football clubs are to adapt the content that is provided in order to retain engagement with Facebook.Jansson added: “It is still the social media platform where most people are active. Therefore, it will be of substantial importance as it is where a bookmaker at scale can reach the right audience, the quest is for the bookmakers to have material that is worthy of audience’s attention.“Everyone is getting better and better with their creatives and how they engage with people, so bookmakers need to follow suit and develop as well.“Any bookmakers’ aim is to have that Facebook page/group where people come to discuss football – if they manage to pull that, then probably they will do better than others. Exactly how that will be done is hard to say, but in my eyes it comes down to how good they can engage with fans through their content and accompanying creatives.” Submit Footstock signs Chris Kamara as new brand ambassador August 18, 2020 StumbleUpon Share Kambi takes full control of LeoVegas sportsbook portfolio August 26, 2020 Share Björn Nilsson: How Triggy is delivering digestible data through pre-set triggers August 28, 2020last_img read more

Bookmakers can’t pick a favourite in roaring reality TV markets

first_img Bookies Corner: Trump Presidency sinks as US 2020 enters its 100 day countdown July 29, 2020 Related Articles Share This summer’s Celebrity Big Brother (CBB) hasn’t even been on our screens for two weeks, but it has already enticed British gamblers. Ladbrokes’ Alex Apati told SBC that: “CBB is as popular as ever with punters” adding that “despite it running for a much shorter period than the ‘normal’ version of the show, the amount of bets we’ve taken so far leads us to believe that we could end up seeing twice as much interest in this series as we did in the series just gone.”When the doors to the Big Brother house flung open on launch night, Shaun Williamson was a heavy favourite, however, the markets have gone south for the Eastenders’ star, who now finds himself a 10/1 outsider. The new 4/1 front-runner is Sandi Bogle, nonetheless, nothing is in the bag yet for the Gogglebox legend as she is closely followed atop the betting by former Girls Aloud star, Sarah Harding.Apati told SBC: “Shaun entered the house as favourite but in truth Sandi hasn’t had to do all that much to leapfrog him into that spot.“We have her down as the people’s housemate and she’s considered the most relatable celeb in there which has clearly had an impact on the odds thus far.“As far as market movers go, Sarah’s name springs to mind immediately. Her odds have been up and down since entering but the support she’s had from the public has been fantastic, forcing our traders to slash her odds even further – making her the clear second favourite at 4/1 as things stand.” GVC absorbs retail shocks as business recalibrates for critical H2 trading August 13, 2020 StumbleUpon Share FSB selects Glenn Elliott as new COO August 12, 2020 Submitlast_img read more

DCMS ups sports integrity dynamics as new Macolin member

first_img Submit StumbleUpon UKGC hails ‘delivered efficiencies’ of its revamped licence maintenance service  August 20, 2020 Share Share The Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has this morning confirmed that UK sports will join the ‘Macolin Convention’ – a European wide initiative seeking to prevent, detect and punish match-fixing.Mims Davies signs off her first directive as new UK Sports & Civic Society Minister, which sees the UK join the inter-state cooperative convention/body dedicated to eliminating all levels of sports corruption/manipulation.Established in 2016, the Macolin Convention encourages member states to create national platforms working together on information/data exchanges, knowledge sharing and resources to detect and prevent sports manipulations.Furthermore, the convention seeks to provide its members with common definitions, co-operation mechanisms and legal instruments/frameworks in the assistance of prosecuting match-fixing and corruption.Updating stakeholders Mims Davies DCMS said: “Match-fixing is a real threat to the integrity of sports. It is a crime that robs spectators of the pleasure of watching a contest that they can trust. While I’m confident that we have a robust system in place to prevent match-fixing, we cannot be complacent. It is a cross-border issue, and only through a coordinated international effort can we mitigate the risks”.Welcoming the UK as new Macolin Member, EU Deputy Secretary General Gabriella Battaini Dragoni highlighted the ongoing work of the Gambling Commission and the Sports Betting Integrity Forum in combating match-fixing in the UK.“I warmly welcome today the United Kingdom’s signature of the Council of Europe Convention on the Manipulation of Sports Competitions. This treaty is the only international legally-binding instrument against match-fixing, illegal betting, bad governance, insider information, conflicts of interests and the use of clubs as shell companies. This is a clear commitment by the United Kingdom to secure integrity in sport through our convention.”Moving forward, The Macolin Convention will further assist UK government sports policy stakeholders, offering advice to sporting institutions, organisations and club executives on implementing improved governance structures and further educating athletes on integrity/responsibility.Commenting on the update Richard Watson, UKGC Executive Director for Enforcement and Intelligence, said:“We are pleased that the government has signed the Convention. It demonstrates our commitment to international collaboration in the fight against the manipulation of sports competitions and to protecting the integrity of both sport and sports betting in Great Britain”. En Marche maintains FDJ sale agenda but strategy remains unclear

In April 2018, the government-appointed BNP Paribas to lead a strategic assessment of FDJ privatisation options.Last July, French news sources reported that En Marche had appointed a collective of national and foreign investment banks to table a potential IPO of the company, ‘moving FDJ into private hands’ – which as yet has seen no bank present an official markets prospectus.Furthermore, En Marche appears to have made no progress on the demand placed by the French Assembly, that a sale FDJ would see the government create a new regulatory authority supervising all formats of French gambling.last_img read more

Swedish leadership hits back at Shekarabi’s ‘torpedo orders’

first_img StumbleUpon Share LeoVegas hits back at Swedish regulations despite Q2 successes August 13, 2020 Kindred marks fastest route to ‘normal trading’ as it delivers H1 growth July 24, 2020 Submit Related Articles Betsson outrides pandemic challenges as regulatory dramas loom July 21, 2020 Share The Chief Executives of Sweden’s leading online gambling businesses have written to the government urging for the suspension of temporary deposit restrictions sanctioned by the Ministry of Health & Social Affairs.A letter co-signed by Pontus Lindwall (Betsson), Henrik Tjärnström (Kindred Group), Gustaf Hagman (LeoVegas), Therese Hillman (NetEnt AB) and Ulrik Bengtsson (William Hill Plc / Mr Green) – urged the government to decline Minister of Health Ardalan Shekarabi’s social order.Last week, citing further protection for Swedish health networks to cope with the ongoing coronavirus crisis, Shekarabi enforced a series of online gambling restrictions – to be established for the remainder of 2020.From 1 June, Swedish gambling inspectorate Spelinspektionen will enforce a temporary SEK 5,000 (€480) weekly deposit limit across all online gambling verticals.Further restrictions see Swedish operators forced to lower their welcome bonus offer to a blanket €100. On top of deposit and bonus restrictions, Shekarabi has advised Spelinspektionen to further limit casino play return-to-player mechanisms. In response, Swedish leadership has lambasted Shekarabi actions, stating that they are counterproductive to the mandate of Sweden’s reformed Gambling Act and that the effect of restrictions will damage Swedish consumer protections in the short and long term.“Every company, regardless of industry, wants to be where the customers are,” reads the letter. “If the customers leave, the companies will follow suit.”“The Swedish gambling market not only provides safety and security to players but also contributes billions annually in much-needed tax revenue and investment in sports.”“By slowly eroding the Swedish gaming market month by month, the government risks bringing about major cuts in security, tax revenue, and societal investment.”Swedish leaders have accused Shekarabi of seeking to ‘torpedo’ gambling legislation that he personally drafted in 2017/2018, during his tenure as  Minister of Civil Affairs. The letter reminds the government that Swedish Parliament had voted to reform the nation’s gambling laws, as means to ‘take control of the market’ and terminate the presence of unlicensed actors.Shekarabi restrictions are therefore counterproductive to the core mandate of the Gambling Act – “Parliament’s preferred method of effective gambling market control is channelling, i.e. regulating what percentage of Swedish consumers choose to play with Swedish-licenced companies”.Sweden’s Minister for Health is also accused of hijacking the coronavirus outbreak to impose industry restrictions without evidence. The CEOs detail that Shekarabi is fully aware of licensed incumbents’ current plight against the black market, in which Sweden’s regulated marketplace has failed to meet its desired customer channelling target rate.Swedish leaders point to a recent independent study, undertaken by research firm Copenhagen Economics, which cites that between 72% and 78% of casino players channelled to legal sites – a figure well below Spelinspektionen expectations. The letter concluded: “The purpose of the re-regulation, which had broad support in the Swedish Parliament, was to create a more sustainable gambling market that functioned well in the long term.“The minister is about to create a “Wild West 2.0” in the gambling market, and he’s doing it in the name of consumer protection. It is now clear to us that Ardalan Shekarabi does not share our ambition to create a sustainable and safe gambling market since his latest proposal is perhaps the best advertisement yet for players to abandon licensed companies in favour of the black market.”last_img read more
